Below, two photographs taken of the gardens at the side of Kildwick Hall. Although we don't know exactly when they were taken they look as if they below to the same sort of period, perhaps the 1940s. There's something very obviously present in the first photograph, that's missing in the second - but what is it ? If you can help us identify the mysterious object, please email the web administrator. Note: Some people have suggested the pretty obvious explanation, namely that it's a stone finial - that is, a stone ball from the top of a gatepost. The problem with that idea is that it simply begs the question where would such a heavy and bulky thing have come from ? Particularly if you bear in mind that the front gates of Kildwick Hall are famously decorated with lions and urns, not stone balls.
